Practical aspects of environmental conservation

Part I (winter) and Part II (summer semester)

Grupa studnetów nad jeziorem

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge about various aspects of nature conservation and management, including methods of solving human-wildlife conflicts. The Part I of the course, in the winter semester, provides students with a theoretical background on environmental protection approaches and skills on data analysis and presentation. The Part II takes place in the summer semester focusing on practical implementation of different methods to assess species diversity during field work.

As part of the lectures, students become familiar with, among others, the history and legal regulations of nature conservation, urban ecology and field research. The seminar allows to improve the ability to critically analyse and select information, describe and present it, practise teamwork and discussion. As part of the course, students will prepare one separate presentation on the protection of natural resources using the analysis of scientific articles. In groups, students will analyse and present information via a discussion forum presentation and will take part in a discussion with an opposing group on a current topic.

During the field work followed by data analysis, students will work on assessing the biodiversity dependence of abiotic factors. In groups, they will make a record on environmental conditions, collect and identify macroinvertebrate taxa and calculate biological indices. The outcome of the course will be a group report that will also be presented.
