Governance of natural resources

The aim of the course is to prepare students to analyze problems in the use of 'global commons' such as climate, biodiversity or marine resources. We also equip students with tools to analyze challenges of environmental governing and sustainability transitions.

Students will learn the theoretical background of the tragedy of the commons, the prisoner's dilemma, and institutions for collective action. We will first practice these concepts in an interactive, in-class economic game (with real rewards!) and other enjoyable exercises. Second, we will discuss them using documentary footage of global climate negotiations. Thirdly, students will apply them in their small group projects. Students will work with selected methods of stakeholder analysis, discourse analysis and scenario thinking. The class projects will benefit from the international group making, international comparisons based on the use of different sources of information.
